Israel's Ambassador to Ethiopia Removed From AU Conference Commemorating Rwandan Genocide
This happened after member states protested Avraham Neguise's presence, Israeli media reported, citing the country's foreign ministry.
The ambassador's participation in the Rwandan genocide commemoration was reportedly unexpected and led to his expulsion after several African countries objected, pausing the meeting until he left.
This is the second time an Israeli diplomat has been removed from an African Union meeting. The first time was in February 2023, when an Israeli delegation was removed from the opening ceremony of the AU summit.
Israel had obtained African Union observer status in 2021, in what is seen as an attempt to counter Palestinian influence. It was later expelled for violating the AU Charter's conditions due to its continued occupation of Palestinian territories.
