‘Still Have a Lot to Work On’: A Survivor’s Warning Against Genocide Ideology
Donatha Mukarukundo was a child in Nyanza when the genocide shattered her once-peaceful, loving family. Fleeing to the forest and later to a refugee camp, she survived horrors—including falling into a pit latrine.
After returning home to nothing, she rebuilt her life through school and survivor support groups.
Though justice has been served for many, Donatha warned that genocide ideology still lingers. She urged the world to never forget, to remain vigilant, and to reject hate in all forms.
“I […] have hope for the future, and I wish the next generation to learn from my life experience. Good leadership of my President Paul Kagame [gives me hope today],” she told Sputnik Africa of the International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Rwandan Genocide.
