All 9 Turbines at Tanzania's Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project Now Operational, Generating 2,115 MW
The Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP) now allows the government to invest further in expanding electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure to reach more citizens across the nation, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Doto Biteko said.
With increased power production, Tanzania is finalizing discussions with Zambia to begin electricity exports. These exports will be facilitated by a new transmission line currently under construction through bilateral cooperation.
The project demonstrates Tanzania's economic independence, Minister of State in the President’s Office for Planning and Investment Kitila Mkumbo stated. He highlighted that 99.5% of the funding came from domestic revenue, fulfilling first President Julius Nyerere's vision of energy self-reliance.
