Tanzania, DRC Finalize Dry Port Land Deal to Accelerate Regional Trade
The move follows a 180% increase in cargo headed to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) via the Dar es Salaam Port in the last four years, the Tanzanian government stated, highlighting the urgent need for dry port infrastructure investment.
Key details of the agreement:
- Tanzania will develop dry ports in three DRC locations: Kasumbalesa, Kasenga, and Kalemie;
- DRC gains port facilities in two Tanzanian areas: Kwala Coast and Katosho;
- All facilities are slated for completion within 18 months under a public-private partnership model;
- Private operators will manage major operations, particularly for the mining sector, with government supervision.
Strategic impact:
These ports will streamline customs and storage for goods moving through the Central Corridor – a regional trade route linking seven African nations.
What are dry ports?
They are inland terminals for transshipping cargo from ships, including storage and customs clearance.
