Mine-Sniffing Rat Earns World Record in Detecting Landmines & Unexploded Bombs in Cambodia
Ronin, an African giant pouched rat, has become the most successful Mine Detection Rat (MDR) for the NGO APOPO.
The furry hero has:
located 109 landmines
detected 15 items of unexploded bombs (UXO)
At just 5 years old, Ronin could keep saving lives for 2+ more years.
Cambodia still has 4-6 million hidden landmines left from wars that ended in 1998. These explosives have:
🟠Killed 20,000 people (1979-2024)
🟠Injured 45,000+
The country hopes to be mine-free by 2030.
