Washington Revokes Visas for South Sudanese, Blocks New Arrivals
This is the first blanket visa revocation since US President Donald Trump's return to the White House.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused South Sudan's government of exploiting the US and stressed that all countries must accept the timely return of their citizens. Washington will reconsider the restrictions upon full cooperation from South Sudan.
The decision comes as the Trump administration moves to reverse Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designations.
About 133 South Sudanese currently benefit from TPS, which shields recipients from deportation due to dangerous conditions in their home country, with another 140 potentially eligible. The program is set to expire in May 2025. The visa crackdown also responds to increasing numbers of African migrants attempting to enter the U.S. through the southern border.
