AU Nominates Togo's President as Peace Mediator Between DRC, Rwanda & M23 Rebels
African Union Chairperson Joao Lourenco announced that Faure Gnassingbe has accepted the nomination to serve as the AU's peace mediator, pending formal approval.
Lourenco, who recently stepped down as mediator to focus on his AU leadership duties, highlighted the worsening humanitarian crisis in eastern DRC and its regional destabilization at an AU Assembly Bureau meeting, which endorsed the proposal.
AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf thanked Lourenco and emphasized the need for a detailed mediation roadmap.
Once confirmed, Gnassingbe will work alongside a panel of five facilitators appointed by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the East African Community (EAC).
