DRC & M23 Rebels Hold First Talks in Qatar, Media Reports
The talks were positive, leading to the M23's withdrawal from the strategic town of Walikale as a goodwill gesture, Western media reported, citing sources.
The previously reported April 9 Doha talks are still expected to proceed. M23 had initially pledged to withdraw from Walikale last month but delayed, accusing the Congolese army of violating commitments. Residents, a local official, and the army confirmed M23's departure last week, according to the media.
Although Rwanda denies military support for the M23 group, the DRC accuses Rwanda of violating its sovereignty and territorial integrity by sending troops to support armed groups. In turn, Rwanda alleges that the DRC supports the FDLR, a group associated with the 1994 Kigali genocide.
