DNA Reveals Lost Human Lineage in 'Green Sahara': Study

DNA from 7,000-year-old mummified women in Libya’s Takarkori rock shelter reveals an unknown and genetically isolated human group that thrived when the Sahara was a lush grassland (14,500–5,000 years ago).

Unique & Isolated

Their genes show minimal Neanderthal ancestry (unlike Eurasians), proving they were cut off from other groups.

They descended from ancient North Africans who split from sub-Saharan populations 50,000 years ago.

Lived as herders (evidence from artifacts).

Disappearance & Legacy

Their isolation ended when the Sahara dried up around 3000 BC, wiping out their community.

But traces of their DNA still survive in some modern North Africans.
