African Leaders, Officials Call for Continent's Digital Sovereignty Through Innovation and AI
Key ideas and initiatives outlined by African leaders and officials at the Global AI Summit on Africa held in Kigali:
Rwandan President Paul Kagame:
▫AI can multiply African potential for innovation and creativity;
▫African nations should boost connectivity and collaboration to leverage AI in reducing digital inequality.
Togolese President Faure Gnassingbe:
▫the continent should not be dependent of foreign platforms;
▫African digital sovereignty should be based on three pillars – data, infrastructure and standards.
Kenyan Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi:
▫Africa needs to review the way it attracts investment in solar, wind and hydropower to ensure affordability and accessibility;
▫increased investment in African's energy sector is "key to unlocking AI-driven growth."
AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Youssef:
▫The continent should mobilize financial resources for AI investment, promote AI literacy;
▫African countries need to adopt policies on AI development.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe-founded Cassava Technologies has recently unveiled plans to build the first AI factory on the continent to give local businesses, governments and researchers access to the latest AI technologies.
