DRC Army Regains Control Over Strategically Important City in North Kivu, National Deputy Says

The Wazalendo, pro-government forces, have regained control of Walikale, National Deputy Michel Moto Muhima said in a statement.

"The atmosphere in the center of Walikale remains very tense, and the people who fled the clashes into the bush have not yet returned. It will take several days for them to return," the Congolese official noted.

He emphasized the challenging humanitarian situation and called on the government to provide effective measures to "secure this highly strategic territory."

In late March, the M23 rebels pledged to redeploy their forces from Walikale to support peace efforts, but did not follow through.
