WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - The United States will impose a 10% tariff on all imports starting on Saturday, with higher tariffs for countries with which the US has the largest trade deficits taking effect next Wednesday, the White House said in a statement on Wednesday.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said his advice to countries hit by tariffs is to "sit back" and not retaliate to avoid further escalation.
"My advice to every country right now is: do not retaliate. Sit back. Take it in. Let's see how it goes. Because if you retaliate, there will be escalation. If you don't retaliate, this is the high watermark," Bessent told Fox News.
The United States will not impose tariffs on imported goods that are critical to manufacturing and national security, like steel/aluminum articles and autos/auto parts, copper, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, and lumber articles, as well as bullion and energy and other certain minerals that are not available in the United States, the White House said in a statement on Wednesday, following an announcement of a 10% tariff on all imports.
Moreover, US President Donald Trump has the power to raise reciprocal tariffs in case the trading partners decide to respond, according to the statement.
Meanwhile, Russia and Belarus are not on the list of countries hit by the new US tariffs because there is no trade with them, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Wednesday.

"Russia and Belarus, there we don't trade," he pointed out.
