Sputnik keeps tracking the history of the pivotal events of the World War II Eastern Front, known as the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 against Hitler's forces.
The Red Army successfully surrounded a German detachment east of Danzig. Kremnica, a vital bastion in the Carpathian mountains, was also taken over by Soviet forces. Wiener Neustadt, a significant industrial hub in Austria, was abandoned by the Wehrmacht.
In all, more than 341 towns were freed. £10,000 was donated by Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie to aid war-torn areas of the USSR.
