MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Mauritius for decades has challenged UK sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago, but it was not until 2019 that the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution urging the UK to give up the islands.
US President Donald Trump has approved the controversial deal which the United Kingdom signed with Mauritius to give up its sovereignty over the Chagos archipelago, where a UK-US military base is located, UK media reported on Tuesday, citing a government spokesperson.
"We are now working with the Mauritian government to finalize the deal and sign the treaty. My understanding is it’s now between us and the Mauritian government to finalize the deal, following the discussions with the US," the spokesperson was quoted as saying by The Telegraph.

Mauritius & UK Continue Talks Over Chagos Archipelago Sovereignty Dispute, Foreign Minister Says
In February, UK Foreign Minister David Lammy said that a deal on handing over sovereignty over the Chagos archipelago to Mauritius would not happen without Trump's approval.
On October 3, the UK provisionally agreed to hand sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. The treaty will see the UK provide financial support and infrastructure investment to Mauritius while retaining control of the airbase on Diego Garcia for an initial period of 99 years.
