US officials have taken issue with South Africa’s legal framework for land expropriation without compensation, as well as the country’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice. South Africa, however, emphasized that its policies aim to redress historical injustices rather than facilitate unlawful land seizures. In a statement, DIRCO expressed satisfaction that key misconceptions had been addressed, particularly those fueled by lobby groups advocating for white minority interests in the US. The department reiterated that land reform efforts are designed to correct structural inequalities stemming from apartheid, rather than to undermine property rights.

The visit follows a series of US actions against South Africa, including health aid cuts and offering refuge to Afrikaners claiming persecution. Despite these tensions, South African officials remain committed to engaging with the US to ensure its policies are accurately interpreted and fairly represented in international discourse.
A high-level South African delegation has
concluded meetings with senior US officials in an effort to mend strained diplomatic relations and address concerns over the country’s land expropriation policy.
Led by G20 sherpa and Director-General of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), Zane Dangor, the delegation engaged with representatives from the US National Security Council, State Department, and Treasury.
The discussions focused on clarifying South Africa’s land reform policies, which the Trump administration has criticized over concerns about minority rights. US officials have taken issue with South Africa’s legal framework for land expropriation without compensation, as well as the country’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice. South Africa, however, emphasized that its policies aim to redress historical injustices rather than facilitate unlawful land seizures.
In a
statement, DIRCO expressed satisfaction that key misconceptions had been addressed, particularly those fueled by lobby groups advocating for white minority interests in the US. The department reiterated that land reform efforts are designed to correct structural inequalities stemming from apartheid, rather than to undermine property rights.
