MOSCOW (Sputnik) - A total of ten Colombians served with Ukrainian troops in the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) in the fall of 2023, nine of the mercenaries were killed, Ukrainian serviceman Serhiy Dzyuba, who was captured in the DPR, told Sputnik in February.
There is no exact data about the number of Colombian mercenaries taking part in the Ukraine conflict on Kiev's side, but it is known that about 70-80 have been killed in combat, Colombian Ambassador to Russia Hector Arenas Neira told Sputnik in an interview released on Wednesday.
"The relatives of Colombians killed in the ranks of the Ukrainian armed forces always contact the Colombian Foreign Ministry to get information about them when they go missing. We know of about 70-80 dead Colombians," the diplomat said.
According to Neira, Colombian embassies often have to search for Colombians when they are presumed dead or captured.
It is unclear how many Colombians are involved in the conflict, the ambassador added.
"Unfortunately, we see that many Colombians are taking part in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. As for the exact number of Colombians taking part in the conflict, it is very difficult to find out. Ukraine has some data, Russia has other numbers. Colombia does not really have much information, as this activity is not supported by the state, quite the contrary, we condemn it," the diplomat noted.
There are also a number of instances in which Colombian citizens are detained by Russian authorities, and in such cases diplomats in Moscow contact Russian agencies, he pointed out.
