Moscow and Hanoi maintain an active political dialogue, including at the highest levels. Vietnam is the only Southeast Asian country that Russian President Vladimir Putin has visited six times, in 2001, 2006, 2010, 2013, 2017, and 2024.
Sputnik Africa is live as Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son are holding talks in Moscow.
The ministers plan to discuss a wide range of bilateral relations issues, including upcoming high-level and summit contacts, as well as major international and regional problems, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.
The interaction between the countries' foreign ministries is regular: an official visit to Russia by Bui Thanh Son took place in September 2021, and Lavrov visited Vietnam in July 2022. In November 2022, the heads of the foreign ministries met in Phnom Penh on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit, and in July 2023, they met in Jakarta during ASEAN ministerial-level events.
