Who is the new CEO of Nigeria's national oil company appointed by President Bola Tinubu?

President Bola Tinubu removed the Nigerian National Petroleum Company's (NNPC) previous chairman, CEO, and all members appointed in November 2023, the presidency said in a statement.

The NNPC's new CEO is Bashir Bayo Ojulari, who has a "stellar career in the oil sector," according to the presidency.

Key details to know about Ojulari:

▪Born in western Nigeria's Kwara state, Ojulari is a graduate of Ahmadu Bello University, with a degree in mechanical engineering;

▪He has worked in Nigeria, Europe and the Middle East in various capacities as a petroleum process and production engineer, strategic planner, field developer and asset manager;

▪During his career, he was chairman and member of the board of trustees of the Nigerian Society of Petroleum Engineers and a fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers;

▪Ojulari joined Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC) in 1991 as an associate production technologist;

▪In 2015, he became the managing director of Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company;

▪Until his new appointment, Ojulari was CEO of Renaissance Africa Energy Company, which has recently led a consortium of indigenous energy firms in the landmark acquisition of the entire equity holding in the SPDC, worth $2.4 billion.

The NNPC's board restructuring aims to enhance operational efficiency, restore investor confidence, boost local content, drive economic growth, and advance gas commercialization, President Tinubu emphasized.
