WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky said in February that he is ready to step down if that is needed to achieve peace or get NATO membership. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly said that Ukraine will never be a member of NATO.
The issue of Kiev's membership in NATO was the cause of the Ukraine conflict, and it was not discussed in the context of the rare earth metals deal, US President Donald Trump said.
"I see he [Volodymyr Zelensky] is trying to renegotiate the rare earth [metals deal]. Through you [journalists], I heard that they now say 'Well, I'll only do the deal if we get into NATO' or something to that effect. Well, number one, that was never discussed," Trump told reporters at the White House.
The issue of Ukraine's membership in NATO was "probably the reason the war started," he stated.
The US top official noted that he expects Russian President Vladimir Putin to make a deal to resolve the Ukrainian conflict, and added that he does not want to impose secondary tariffs on Russian oil.

"I want to see him make a deal, so that we stop Russian soldiers and Ukrainian soldiers and other people from being killed […] I want to make sure that he follows through, and I think he will. I don't want to go to secondary tariffs on his oil, but I think, you know, it's something I would do if I thought he wasn't doing the job," the US presisent added.
