Leader of the right-wing National Rally party's parliamentary group, Marine Le Pen, said on Monday that she would not be asking President Emmanuel Macron for pardon after a court in Paris sentenced her to a five-year ban from elections and a suspended prison term earlier in the day. At the same time, she also rejected the idea that she might become the prime minister if National Rally leader Jordan Bardella wins the presidential election. In addition to a five-year ban from elected public roles, a Paris court also sentenced Le Pen to four years in prison, with two years suspended and the other two to be served with an electronic bracelet outside of jail. France's Le Pen Refuses to Seek Pardon From Macron After Court-Imposed Election Ban
11:06 01.04.2025 (Updated: 11:10 01.04.2025) MOSCOW (Sputnik) - On Monday, a Paris court found Marine Le Pen guilty of embezzling European Parliament funds to hire fictitious assistants for party members and sentenced her to a five-year ban from elected public roles, effective immediately, which means she will be barred from running in the 2027 presidential election.
Leader of the right-wing National Rally party's parliamentary group, Marine Le Pen, said on Monday that she would not be asking President Emmanuel Macron for pardon after a court in Paris sentenced her to a five-year ban from elections and a suspended prison term earlier in the day.
"No. It concerns the final judgment, which is not my case," Le Pen said in an interview with a French media outlet.
At the same time, she also rejected the idea that she might become the prime minister if National Rally leader Jordan Bardella wins the presidential election.
"Jordan Bardella is an outstanding asset of our movement. But I hope that we will not use this asset before we really need it," the French official pointed out.
In addition to a five-year ban from elected public roles, a Paris court also sentenced Le Pen to four years in prison, with two years suspended and the other two to be served with an electronic bracelet outside of jail. Le Pen vowed to appeal.
The next presidential election in France will be held between April 8 and April 23, 2027. In 2022, Le Pen lost to incumbent President Emmanuel Macron in the second round.
