MOSCOW, March 28 (Sputnik) - Israel has discussed relocating displaced Palestinians from Gaza to South Sudan, Somalia and Indonesia with the three countries, a US news website reported on Friday, citing two Israeli officials and one former US official.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly tasked intelligence agency Mossad with looking for countries that would agree to take in large numbers of Palestinians.
US President Donald Trump has not been pursuing his plan to displace all two million Palestinians to rebuild the enclave. The sources told the media that the president's special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, was instead focused on mediating a new deal between Israel and the Palestinian movement Hamas.
In early February, US President Donald Trump called Gaza a "demolition site" and said that the US would "take over" its reconstruction once the Israel-Hamas war ended. He suggested that Palestinians could be relocated to other countries, such as Egypt or Jordan, as part of his plan to turn the Gaza Strip into "the Riviera of the Middle East."
Earlier, a number of countries, including Somalia, rejected Trump's resettlement plan. Egypt declared that a reconstruction plan for Gaza was under development.
