BRICS is an intergovernmental organization established in 2006. In 2024, new members joined BRICS. Adding to Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, it now includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, UAE and Saudi Arabia; the latter has not formalized membership but participates in BRICS meetings. Indonesia also joined the organization in 2025.
The BRICS countries have similar views on many issues and could form a coalition to present a united front at various international forums, Igor Makarov, Head of the Department of World Economy, Faculty of World Economy and World Politics, HSE University, said.
"A very good precedent, when, perhaps, for the first time, the BRICS countries acted as a united front and spoke on behalf of the entire association—the United Nations Biodiversity Conference. But this is actually the only precedent," he said on the sidelines of a Russian-Chinese conference of the Valdai Discussion Club and the Center for Russian Studies at East China Normal University.
There are prerequisites for creating coalitions within international negotiations in many areas, Makarov said, noting that it would strengthen the BRICS countries position and voice.
