MOSCOW (Sputnik) - A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, with tremors felt in Bangladesh, India, China and Thailand. According to the latest data, the death toll from the earthquake reached 1,644, with 3,408 injured and 139 missing. A number of countries, including Russia and Belarus, have been assisting Myanmar with relief efforts.
A group of Russian rescuers and dog handlers has been sent to Myanmar’s Mandalay Region, which was hit the most by the deadly earthquake, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) said on Sunday.

“A joint meeting of representatives of Russia’s EMERCOM with the government leadership was held in Naypyidaw. It was decided to transfer a joint detachment of Russia’s EMERCOM to the most devastated area of the country, the Mandalay Region,” the ministry said on Telegram.

A group of 20 rescuers, dog handlers and drone systems operators, who will be the first to start search-and-rescue operators, was sent to the Mandalay Region by plane, the ministry said, adding that another 10 Russian rescuers departed to the site by off-road cars to assess the infrastructure and the condition of the roadway.
Russia’s EMERCOM team became a part of the international crisis response center, which was established in accordance with the UN Charter at the airport of Naypyidaw to coordinate the actions of international rescue teams, the ministry added.
