On 15 April 2023, armed clashes between the Rapid Support Forces and the regular army in the Sudanese capital Khartoum were reported. Later, the fighting between the military forces spread to other Sudanese regions.

On Wednesday, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the commander-in-chief of the Sudanese army and head of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, announced that the Sudanese armed forces had freed Khartoum from the rebel units of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Residents of Khartoum took to the streets in celebration, cheering, dancing, and waving Sudanese flags after the army announced its victory over the RSF and their retreat.
In Cairo, Sudanese expatriates also celebrated the liberation of Khartoum by the Sudanese army.
One of the videos published on X captures the Virgin Mary Church in Port Sudan ringing its bells to celebrate the army's successes and the liberation of the city.
