Last week, Nicholas Haysom, the Head of the UN Mission in South Sudan, said that the nation is at risk of returning to civil war, a situation that threatens to reverse the major peace progress achieved since the signing of the Revitalized Agreement in 2018.
South Sudan's First Vice President, Riek Machar, was placed under house arrest in Juba on Wednesday night. In response, the United Nations mission in South Sudan appealed for calm amid escalating tensions throughout the country.

"Following reports tonight of the detention of First Vice President Riek Machar, the UN Mission in South Sudan calls on all parties to exercise restraint and uphold the Revitalized Peace Agreement," Nicholas Haysom said.

Earlier that day, President Salva Kiir Mayardit reiterated his steadfast dedication to achieving peace, emphasizing his determination to prevent the country from slipping back into war.
