Nigeria Sends Over 170 Peacekeepers to Disputed Abyei Region, Reports Say
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The oil-rich Abyei region has been disputed between Sudan and South Sudan since the latter gained independence in 2011. The same year, the UNSC established the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei mission to monitor tensions along the border, ease the delivery of humanitarian aid and use force to protect civilians and aid workers.
The Nigerian army has sent 171 peacekeepers to the disputed Abyei region, located on the border between Sudan and South Sudan, as part of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), Chief of Operations, Nigerian Army, Major General Boniface Sinjen reportedly said.
"The current security situation in Abyei remains fragile and unpredictable. Recent reports have revealed persistent intercommunal conflicts, armed skirmishes and humanitarian crisis in Abyei area," Nigerian newspaper The Nation quoted Sinjen as saying at a graduation ceremony for troops to be deployed to Abyei.
The training of the UNISFA peacekeepers reportedly included providing medical care and conducting examinations, studying the principles of UN peacekeeping, rules of engagement and international law, as well as conducting an operation using armored vehicles.
