Kenya Recognizes Independence of Self-Proclaimed Kosovo Causing Serbia's Stern Condemnation
08:25 27.03.2025 (Updated: 13:32 27.03.2025) MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Serbia does not recognize Kosovo's self-declared independence and refers to it as its Kosovo and Metohija region. A large ethnic Serb community is still residing in Kosovo's north, often bearing the brunt of diplomatic tensions between Belgrade and Pristina and protesting what they consider discriminatory Kosovo policies.
Kenya has recognized the independence of the self-proclaimed Republic of Kosovo, Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani said.
"The Republic of Kosovo extends its deepest gratitude to President William Samoei Ruto and the Republic of Kenya for the historic decision on the recognition of our country’s independence. This recognition strengthens the friendship between our nations and paves the way for enhanced bilateral cooperation ... A special thanks to former President and FM Pacolli and all others who have contributed towards this decision," Osmani said on X on Wednesday, attaching a photo of the letter from the Kenyan president.
At the same time, the Serbian Foreign Ministry strongly condemned Kenya's decision to recognize the independence of Kosovo.
"This step is a gross violation of international law and a direct violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1244, which guarantees the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Serbia," the ministry added.
