The AU Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) replaced the previous AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), and is expected to become fully operational by July 1.
Representatives from the African Union (AU) Commission, Somalia's government, and troop-contributing countries held a four-day meeting to finalize capacity-building plans for the AU Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), the AU said in a statement.

"One of the key deliverables of this meeting is the finalization of the Statement of Unit Requirements, which details the specific troop and police capabilities required for AUSSOM to effectively execute its mandate," head of the AUC delegation Brig. Gen. Billy Atwoki Winter pointed out.

The mission's forces will include Quick Reaction Forces (QRFs), Tactical Battle Groups, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance capabilities, aviation enablers, and police components to enhance operational effectiveness in countering al-Shabaab* terrorists, the AU noted.

"The deployment of dedicated QRFs at sector level is meant to be a game changer in how we respond to emerging threats. Once operational, this will significantly enhance Somalia's security posture and create conditions for sustainable stabilization," the Somali president's senior defense advisor Jihan Abdullahi Hassan stated.

The meeting also worked on finalizing sector borders, operational zones, and military and police deployments, the statement added.
