Eastern, Southern Africa Experiencing Serious Cholera Outbreak Since Early 2024, UNICEF Reports
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The worst situation with the cholera outbreak is recorded in South Sudan and Angola, where the proportion of children under 15 among those infected was about 50% and 40%, respectively, the UNICEF said.
Eastern and Southern Africa are experiencing a significant cholera outbreak, with
more than 178,000 cases recorded over the past 15 months, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF)
reported."Over 178,000 cases of cholera have been confirmed in 16 countries in Eastern and Southern Africa from January 2024 until March 2025. Worsened by limited access to water, sanitation, hygiene and health services, the alarming number has resulted in close to 2,900 deaths, many of which are children," the organization said in a statement on Monday.
Cholera is a highly contagious
infection that spreads through contaminated food and water. The infection can cause acute watery diarrhea and can be fatal in just a few hours in severe cases if it is not treated.
Meanwhile, the latest data from 2022 indicated that almost 120 million people including 60 million children are drinking unsafe water in Eastern and Southern Africa, with up to 22% of the population in the region having no access to water at all, the UNICEF emphasized.
