In addition to political instability, Mozambique is facing a deepening economic crisis. S&P Global Ratings downgraded the country’s local-currency debt to “selective default” on Friday, citing a distressed debt swap earlier this month.
President Daniel
Chapo met with opposition leader Venancio Mondlane on Sunday evening in Maputo to discuss pressing national issues, including political reconciliation and economic stability, the presidency
reported.Chapo and Mondlane addressed the
ongoing political crisis following last year’s disputed elections, in which Mondlane and his supporters accused Chapo’s Frelimo party of electoral fraud. The aftermath saw nationwide protests that led to violent clashes with security forces, resulting in at least 361 deaths, according to local rights group Decide Platform.
“The meeting […] reinforces the need to deepen reconciliation and consolidate a stable political environment, essential for the country's socioeconomic development. Dialogue among various political and social forces is a crucial step in restoring trust in institutions and ensuring a harmonious future for all Mozambicans,” the statement read.
The meeting comes just weeks after Chapo signed the Political Agreement for an Inclusive National Dialogue with nine political parties, aiming to foster reconciliation and discuss key governance issues, including constitutional reforms. The agreement, which has been welcomed by several political and civil society groups, is awaiting approval by the National Assembly.
