Africa supports international criminal justice through the International Criminal Court (ICC), but objects to its perceived double standard in implementation, John-Mark Iyi, Associate Professor and Director of the African Center for Transnational Criminal Justice at the University of the Western Cape, told Sputnik Africa. He stated that Africa's vision involved equal application of international criminal justice, meaning the same arrest warrant procedures should apply to all leaders, regardless of their origin. According to Iyi, the ICC faces opposition not only from Africa but also from major global powers. One example of this opposition is the US "Hague Invasion Act," which allows the use of military force to free US personnel or allies detained by the ICC. Speaking of the Rodrigo Duterte case, the professor said that it reveals potential political maneuvering that could negatively impact the ICC in the long run.
