The International Organization of La Francophonie, created in 1970 and headquartered in Paris, is an international organization representing countries with a significant connection to the French language and culture, many of which were formerly part of the French colonial empire.

Nigeriens, reacting to their country's withdrawal from the International Organization of La Francophonie, called it a "historic decision."

"Over time, we've come to understand that La Francophonie has become a mechanism, like ECOWAS, like other regional and even international organizations, working for Western imperialism, particularly French imperialism," one of the citizens said, noting that "Niamey is the cradle of La Francophonie."
