Tuesday's conversation between the Russian and the US presidents indicates that the US is "moving away from its historic relationship with Europe," the researcher said, emphasizing that "a sustained Russia-US cooperation would really lead to some form of realignments," especially in Europe.
Tuesday's phone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump signals shifting global power dynamics and potential for US-Russia cooperation, researcher at Kenya's Institute for Security Studies Dr. Nicodemus Minde told Sputnik Africa.
"The end of the conflict, without a doubt, will reshape global polarities and, of course, challenge the dominant and dogmatic principles and global political theories like the liberal democracy that has actually been very dominant for the past 50–60 years up to now," he said.
For
direct talks between Trump and Putin to have long-term global benefits, it is necessary to translate this "personal dynamic" into formal, policy-oriented agreements that go beyond individual leadership, Minde emphasized, describing Russia and the US as possible "guarantors to international peace and security."
"I think this is also coming to a broader global realization that these two global superpowers, that is, Russia and the United States, are key in determining the future of global peace and stability. And of course, this form of renewed talks between the United States and Russia would somehow bring to some form of joint agreements that will really shape future global stability," the researcher noted.
Meanwhile, by guaranteeing the safety and fair treatment of the surrendered Ukrainian soldiers, Putin is showing that Russia "is acting in a
reasonable way and willing to adhere to international norms," the speaker added.
"And of course with this, it was able to build its global image and improve its global standing, even at a time when we are seeing a renewed impetus where Russia is now gaining more and more international good standing in the midst of this ongoing conflict," he explained.
Potential Hockey Match Between Russia & US Will Help Reduce Tensions & 'Portend Rapprochement'
"I look at the significance of an ice hockey match as very, very vital towards building trust and improving cultural ties. This will be part of an ongoing global conversation around the importance of cultural diplomacy, which has oftentimes been used," Minde said.
However, according to the Nairobi-based researcher, such an endeavor will still likely face several challenges, such as various attacks or the possibility of an incident sowing mistrust between the nations.
The speaker recalled the example of cultural diplomacy with visits by NBA players, particularly Dennis Rodman, to North Korea, which, in his opinion, helped to break the ice in the Asian country's relations with the United States and made a meeting between the leaders possible.
"We saw some form of a thawing of relations and a building of trust around global issues," he added.
