Police said they are conducting a thorough investigation into the pipeline explosion, which occurred in Nigeria's Rivers State on Monday and could reportedly cost $35.3 million a day in damages.
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the southern oil-rich state of Rivers, citing poor governance, following reports of an explosion on a section of the Trans Niger Pipeline in Rivers on Monday.
"The latest security reports made available to me show that between yesterday and today there have been disturbing incidents of vandalization of pipelines by some militants without the governor taking any action to curtail them," President Bola Tinubu said in an address to the nation on Tuesday.
The state of emergency took effect immediately on Tuesday, the president said.
"In the circumstance, having soberly reflected on and evaluated the political situation in Rivers State [...] it has become inevitably compelling for me to invoke the provision of section 305 of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State with effect from today," Tinubu stated.
Following the declaration of the state of emergency in Rivers, the Nigerian president suspended the state's Governor Siminalayi Fubara for an initial period of six months and nominated Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas as an interim administrator.
"The administrator will not make any new laws. He will, however, be free to formulate regulations as may be found necessary to do his job, but such regulations will need to be considered and approved by the Federal Executive Council and promulgated by the president for the state," Nigeria's top official explained.
Key reasons for Fubara's dismissal include the
governor's demolition of the state House of Assembly over a year ago, failure to rebuild it, and continued defiance of court rulings aimed at restoring constitutional order, leading to what Tinubu described as a "political crisis" with "no way democratic governance."
