WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – On Sunday, France24 reported that French lawmaker Raphael Glucksmann has called for the United States to return the Statue of Liberty to France, arguing that the country under Donald Trump's leadership no longer embodies the high ideals represented by the monument.
The United States is absolutely not going to return the Statue of Liberty to France following a request made by one of the members of the European Parliament from France, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Monday.

“Absolutely not, and my advice to that unnamed low-level French politician would be to remind them that it's only because of the United States of America, that the French are not speaking German right now,” Leavitt told a press briefing, commenting on a recent proposal by a French lawmaker to return the iconic monument.

Previously, French lawmaker Raphael Glucksmann reportedly said that the US has chosen to "side with the tyrants" and fired researchers for "demanding scientific freedom."
The Statue of Liberty was revealed in New York City's harbor on October 28, 1886, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence. This iconic monument was a gift from the people of France to the United States and was designed by the French artist Frederic Auguste Bartholdi.
