The International BRICS+ Mas-Wrestling Tournament, held in Moscow on Saturday, brought together young people from Russia, BRICS+ countries, and several African nations, including Congo, Togo, Nigeria, Zambia, Sierra Leone, and Angola, aiming to promote national sports, sports diplomacy, and strengthen international ties.
Mas-wrestling, a traditional sport of Russia's Yakuts ethnic group, could be developed in Africa, said Leticia Chioca, winner of the International
BRICS+ Mas-Wrestling Tournament held in Moscow and organized by RUDN University and the Russian Committee of National and Non-Olympic Sports.
"My dream is to establish a mas-wrestling association to provide more opportunities for the youths who would like to participate in this sport," the Angolan athlete said.
The champion plans to continue competing internationally while promoting mas-wrestling, a traditional sport of Russia's Yakuts ethnic group, in Africa.
"While promoting this sport in Africa, I am open to opportunities also in Russia, but I want to contribute to mas-wrestling development in my own country as well. […] I also want to organize a tourney of mas-wrestling in Angola," Chioca noted.
At the same time, the development of mas-wrestling in Africa presents both challenges and opportunities, as Africans are not familiar with this traditional Russian sport, she pointed out.
"I connect with this sport on a personal level, not just as a physical choice, but also the spirit of community and tradition. I feel a big sense of pride to be part of this sport. The growth of mas-wrestling in Africa presents both challenges and opportunities. One challenge is raising awareness. People may not be familiar with these sports," the mas-wrestler emphasized.
