All Belgian diplomats in Rwanda are required to leave the country within 48 hours, the east African country's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The government of Rwanda severed diplomatic relations with Belgium on Monday, citing Belgium's "pitiful attempts to sustain its neocolonial delusions," the Rwandan Foreign Ministry said.
"Belgium has consistently undermined Rwanda, both well before and during the ongoing conflict in the DRC, in which Belgium has a deep and violent historical role, especially in acting against Rwanda," read the statement.
According to the Foreign Ministry, Belgium "systematically mobilizes against Rwanda in different forums, using lies and manipulation to secure an unjustified hostile opinion of Rwanda in an attempt to destabilize both Rwanda and the region."
"Belgians destroyed Rwanda, killed Rwandans, and this history goes beyond just the past 30 years," President Paul Kagame said in an address to the nation earlier.
The Rwandan top official also accused Brussels of lobbying for sanctions against Kigali over
the conflict in the eastern DRC.
"Belgians go to Kinshasa and point a finger towards Rwanda and say they will impose sanctions on us and also mobilize the world against Rwanda. They are shameless. Mobilizing the world against Rwanda, with our small size? They should leave us alone," he noted.
