10:14 16.03.2025 (Updated: 17:11 17.03.2025) MOSCOW, March 15 (Sputnik) - Mozambique's National Institute of Disaster Management said on Saturday that it is on the ground coordinating response operations to Tropical Cyclone Jude, which struck Mozambique on Monday, causing widespread destruction and leaving thousands displaced.
At least sixteen people have been killed and another 59 injured after Cyclone Jude hit northern Mozambique on Monday, the country's National Institute of Disaster Management (INGD) said on Saturday.
Earlier this week, media put the death toll from the natural disaster at six, with 20 injured.
"Despite mitigation efforts, Cyclone Jude has already killed 16 people, injured 59, and two missing. More than 302,000 people have been affected, including 65,164 families who have seen their homes destroyed or damaged," the INGD said in a statement.
Almost 33,000 buildings have been completely destroyed, the institute added.
"The cyclone also damaged transportation and communication infrastructure: 18 bridges were destroyed; 2,859 km of roads were damaged and 671.70 km of roads were impassable. In the energy sector, 1,224 poles were toppled and 73 km of power lines were destroyed, adding to the chaos," the statement read.
