Ethiopian Airlines, as a major airline in Africa, significantly impacts regional trade, commerce, and tourism, with its extensive network across Africa facilitating the movement of goods and people. Founded in 1945, the state-owned company also cooperates with other regional airlines, increasing route coverage and passenger options.
Ethiopian Airlines Group signed a Letter of Intent with the African Development Bank (AfDB) to partner on the Bishoftu International Airport Development Project in Ethiopia.
Ethiopian Airlines is leading a $7.8 billion project to expand Ethiopia's airport capacity, addressing growing passenger and cargo demand. The new airport aims to increase annual passenger capacity from 17 million to 60 million by 2040.
At the signing ceremony, Ethiopian Finance Minister Ahmed Shide thanked the AfDB for its support, including $1.2 billion in investments, and highlighted Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's economic reforms.

Shide requested further AfDB support for reform, regional integration, and renewable energy. AfDB President Akinwumi Adesina affirmed commitment to the airport project, calling it an "African flagship," and praised Ethiopia's growth and Addis Ababa's transformation under Abiy.
Both sides agreed to deepen their partnership for the benefit of Ethiopia and the region.
