Last October, the UK agreed to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, retaining control of the Diego Garcia military base, operated jointly with the US, under a 99-year lease. During a meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the White House in late February, US President Trump signaled his likely approval of the deal.
Mauritius and the UK continue the negotiations over the Chagos Archipelago sovereignty dispute, Foreign Minister Dhananjay Ramful told the Press Trust of India news agency.

"It's in the interest of both countries, be it India, Mauritius, and also the UK and the US, for us to reach a deal on Chagos once and for all. Bring stability, bring visibility, bring certainty with regards to the base, which is being operational at Diego Garcia," the Mauritius official stated.

The Chagos deal was negotiated just before Mauritius' general election in November, but after coming to power, the new government "wanted to have a fresh look at the deal," Ramful reportedly noted.

"The struggle to restore our sovereignty over Chagos is a long virtue. [...] It's good that the UK has decided to come to the table and reach a deal with Mauritius," the foreign minister added.
