Serbian Parliament Establishes BRICS Cooperation Group, Lawmaker Says
BELGRADE (Sputnik) - In October 2024, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic stated that BRICS popularity in Serbia had reached 42%, matching that of the EU, according to opinion polls. Vucic also said that Belgrade would remain committed to EU integration but acknowledged that BRICS might be the subject of a future referendum in Serbia.
A group for
cooperation with BRICS has been established in the Serbian parliament, Skupstina, chairman of the committee on the diaspora and Serbs in the region Dragan Stanojevic told Sputnik.
The group was formed on the initiative of Serbia's Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vulin and the Movement of Socialists (DS) party, and is currently undergoing the registration procedure, the politician said.
"DS's deputy president Bojan Torbica became its [group's] president, I became its deputy, and our party, We — Voice from the People, fully supported this, literally the day before yesterday our initiative submitted to the parliament," Stanojevic pointed out.
At the same time, the ruling majority around the Serbian Progressive Party did not support the initiative, but 18 lawmakers voted in favor, the official noted, adding that information about the group will soon appear on the parliament's website.
A charter for a BRICS cooperation group has been drawn up and is open to representatives of all interested parties, the politician said.
"I think this is a good event, and it will produce results in the future," Stanojevic added.
Deputy Prime Minister Vulin, who has repeatedly stated that
Serbia is interested in joining BRICS, represented official Belgrade at the bloc's summit in Russia's Kazan last October.
