Virimai Nhedega, aka Vee Mhofu, a prominent Mbira performer, is on a mission to share its deep cultural significance worldwide.
For the Zimbabwean artist, Mbira is more than an instrument; it’s a spiritual connection. His journey with Mbira began at age 12 when he discovered one in a river while swimming. Driven by passion, he learned from village elders and even received songs through dreams, believing his ancestors guided him.
Now a renowned Mbira performer and teacher, Nhedega envisions global recognition for the instrument, comparing its potential rise to reggae music.
“If you look at reggae music, it was pushed from Jamaica to the whole world, and that’s what we must do. I think so because we must push this Mbira to international levels. Here in Zimbabwe, we have a lot of tourism coming from Mbira. I have many fans abroad who come here, to Zimbabwe, just to see me and learn Mbira because I’m also a teacher,” Vee Mhofu emphasized.
