Russia is the most heavily sanctioned country in the world, with over 20,000 sanctions imposed on it. Zimbabwe is also facing illegal economic sanctions that were imposed as a punishment for land reform efforts in the early 2000s.
Unilateral sanctions against Zimbabwe and Russia "were, are and shall be illegal," Zimbabwean Foreign Minister Amon Murwira told Sputnik Africa.
"Unilateral [...] means that when you have accumulated a certain economic and military power, you can't use it to bully others outside of the mechanism of the United Nations," Murwira said.
The minister called for a return to the "operation of international law" and to behave "according to the Charter of the United Nations" as a multilateral mechanism for solving global problems.
Earlier, Murwira and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov signed a declaration on countering unilateral sanctions.
