In December 2019, Guinea-Bissau held its last presidential elections, where Umaro Sissoco Embalo emerged victorious in the second round. In late February, he announced that the next presidential elections are scheduled for November 30. On September 11, 2024, Embalo declared that he would not seek re-election when his term expires.
Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Sissoco Embalo threatened to expel a political mission sent by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the bloc said on Sunday.
The mission, which was deployed alongside the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel, aimed to facilitate a consensus on conducting elections this year. However, according to the ECOWAS statement, the mission was forced to leave Bissau early on March 1 following threats from the president.
The dispute centers around the timing of President Embalo's term, with the political opposition arguing that it should have ended last week. In contrast, the Supreme Court of Justice has ruled that his term concludes on September 4.
