12:19 01.03.2025 (Updated: 12:09 03.03.2025) MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in the Chinese capital, Beijing, on Friday, where the sides exchanged views on topical issues of global and regional security.
Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu and Chinese President Xi Jinping, during the talks, emphasized the inadmissibility of extending NATO's area of responsibility to the Asia-Pacific region, the Russian Security Council said
in a statement on Friday.
"Special attention was paid to discussing the situation in the Asia-Pacific [...] The inadmissibility of extending NATO’s area of responsibility to the Asia-Pacific, the importance of maintaining an Association of South East Asian Nations-centric security architecture in the region and the risks posed by narrow-bloc closed formats emerging in Asia were emphasized," the statement read.
Xi and Shoigu further emphasized the importance of maintaining stability on the Korean Peninsula, the Russian Security Council added.
Moreover, the two sides discussed the issues of eliminating threats in the Central Asian region during the talks,
the Security Council pointed out.
"The parties [...] noted the need to continue coordinating steps on key international platforms, primarily BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization [SCO]. Taking into account China's chairmanship in the SCO, they paid special attention to the issues of leveling threats in the Central Asian region," the statement said.
The Russian and Chinese officials also reaffirmed their readiness to hold the next round of consultations on strategic security with the participation of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the statement added.
