On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embalo in Moscow. After the meeting, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that cooperation between Russia and Guinea-Bissau is developing and expanding beyond traditional resource extraction projects.
The recent meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Guinea-Bissau's President Oumarou Sissoku Embalo represents a significant step forward in bilateral relations, according to Dr. Nicholas Idris Erameh, a senior research fellow at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs.

"In any form of relationship, both parties start to gain so many things. […] Guinea-Bissau starts to benefit more in terms of the kinds of re-engagement diplomatic assistance Russia will be providing," Dr. Erameh told Sputnik Africa.

At the same time, this engagement provides Russia with a strategic opportunity to expand its influence in West Africa, especially in light of growing dissatisfaction with the historical role and influence of Western former colonial powers such as France in the region, he added.

Guinea-Bissau Ties With Russia Signals Growing Influence, Potential Mediation Role in Africa: Expert
"This position itself further creates room for Russia to cement its relationship with Guinea-Bissau and, by extension, all African countries. Now, this is possible given the kind of foreign policy or the kind of interaction that Russia itself brings to the table to Guinea-Bissau and other countries," Dr. Erameh explained.
The significant 10% increase in trade turnover between Russia and Africa last year, cited by President Putin, further underscores the potential for economic gains, Dr. Erameh emphasized, citing the economic benefits for Guinea-Bissau, which is currently facing economic challenges.
Looking ahead, Dr. Erameh believes President Embalo's visit could pave the way for increased participation by Guinea-Bissau in Russia's strategic initiatives, such as BRICS and other multilateral organizations.
