The Western Sahara issue fueled Algerian-Moroccan tensions for decades, stemming from Spain's 1975 withdrawal and the subsequent conflict between Morocco and the separatist Polisario Front, which lasted until a 1991 ceasefire. The UN does not recognize sovereignty claims by either side.
