Can Nigeria Become Africa's AI Powerhouse?
Africa's most populous country is establishing its first artificial intelligence-centered university, positioning itself as a leader in shaping the continent's digital future.
Wini University is launching as Nigeria's first higher institution dedicated to artificial intelligence, marking a significant step toward placing the country as a leader in cutting-edge technology. Located in Epe, Lagos, the university aims to train a new generation in AI, blockchain, data science, and machine learning—fields critical to the digital economy. The initiative is a strategic push to transform Lagos into Africa's "Silicon Valley," tackling challenges like unemployment and the tech skills gap.
African Currents spoke with Tim Akano, Chairman of WiniGroup Inc., Nigeria, about his vision and motivation for establishing the country's first AI-based university.
"The fourth industrial revolution, technologies included things like blockchain, artificial intelligence, cloud technology. And we now decided on our own, my team and I, that the time is now that Africa should be at the party of this revolution; that we've lost and we've missed out on the first three global parties that took place, that changed the world. But, this fourth one, we call it 4.0 industrial revolution, which is: another name for it is AI era and not just for our own generation, but for the sake of the coming generations," Akano said.
