Casamance, separated from northern Senegal by Gambia, has been the site of a conflict since 1982, claiming thousands of lives and harming the region's economy.
The Senegalese government and the Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance (MFDC) signed a peace agreement at the Palace of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau on Sunday, according to the media. The agreement was mediated by Guinea-Bissau's President Umaro Sissoco Embalo.
Senegal's Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, praising the relationship between Senegal and Guinea-Bissau, conveyed President Bassirou Diomaye Faye's gratitude to Guinea-Bissau's president for his role in concluding negotiations between the MFDC and the Senegalese state.
