Relations between Russia and South Africa are based on the principles of partnership and equality, President Vladimir Putin stated in October, on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Russia's Kazan, during a meeting with President Cyril Ramaphosa, who then noted that Pretoria considers Moscow a valued ally and friend.
South Africa does not intend to stop cooperation with Russia, heeding the calls of European Union politicians, President Cyril Ramaphosa told a Russian media outlet on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers Meeting in Johannesburg.
"We have a relationship with many countries in the world. And it so happens that Russia is one of them. The UK is another. France is another. Ethiopia. And Nigeria and all countries. So, we have relations with many countries. So, to say that we isolate this country and that country is not part of our foreign policy framework. We continue to work with Russia on a number of issues, yes," the South African top official said.
According to a correspondent of a Russian media outlet, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas tried to urge South Africa to stop cooperation with Russia.

Russia, South Africa Aim to Resolve Conflicts in Africa, Middle East: Russian Foreign Ministry
Speaking at a joint press conference with South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola on Thursday, Kallas claimed that the EU was "the reliable, the predictable partner that is of value in these current turbulent times," arguing that differences with South Africa were in the past, referring to Pretoria's non-aligned stance on the Ukraine conflict and its military exercises with Russian and Chinese warships, which are perceived to have antagonized EU views.
